Petrozavodsk is the Capital of Karelia, an area that at various points in history has belonged to both Finland and Russia. Lying on the shores of amazingly picturesque Lake Onega, the lakes and forests of the Republic of Karelia are easily accessible, as is the UNESCO world heritage site of Kizhi Island.
